Edison School produced a STAR prep video and showed a 45 point increase in their API. Research shows, students who do well on the STAR exam know the importance of testing and how test results will be used. A STAR preparation video can make a difference; by encouraging students to be at their best on testing days, offering test taking tips and strategies, and asking families to let their children know the STAR test is important. Sponsored by the Noyce Foundation, this video profiles "Teacher-Coach Leadership Teams; a Practical Strategy for Efective Writing Instruction." School staff dedicated to improving writing instruction through Writer's Workshop is presented working with a coach, and meeting for regular grade level planning sessions with their coach and principal.
Mountain View Whisman District wanted to increase parent involvement in their children's education. A series of videos were developed for students to take home and practice certain skills as in this math facts practice video. Videos were distributed to students at conference time and parents were asked to view with their children as they practiced math facts, sight words, academic vocabulary etc.. "Are You Ready for Kindergarten" was produced with First 5 San Mateo County (English and Spanish) and distributed to parents and families preparing to enter Kindergarten the following year. The video offers families tips and advice on preparing for Kindergarten as well as how to get started in the registration process.
Pacifica School District video profiling the District's "Problem of the Month" program. Interview with students and staff present how the program was initiated and and received by students. The goal of the video was to expand Problem of the Month throughout the District. This video was produced with California Even Start to serve as part of the keynote address at the Even Start National Conference.
treehousedv: What We Do... Board Math and Board Language are instructional strategies identified by the Redwood City School District as priorities in standardizing best practices across the District. Releasing teachers to observe Board Math is expensive. Presenting video of Board Math across multiple grade levels at staff meetings is efficient, offering opportunity for discussion as a whole staff with the site administrator's leadership.
Redwood City School District through a Kaiser Permanente grant offered teachers training in integrating exercise in daily class schedules. The video is part of a federally mandated "student wellness" program for which the District was recognized. The Sobrato Early Academic Learning (SEAL) program supports second language learners and their families throughout Santa Clara and San Mateo Counties. Parenting education and family literacy nights, ESL classes, pre school programs and computer literacy classes were taped along with interviews with families participating in SEAL programs.
A video profiling Roosevelt School's Project-Based Learning instructional program interviewed staff and community members explaining why PBL is effective instruction. The goal of the video was to elicit additional support and expand PBL to a school-wide instructional focus. Academic Youth Development (AYD) is an Algebra readiness program with the goal of supporting the successful transition of students from middle school to high school mathematics. The goal of the video was to document a 14-day summer session and present four participating students as "case studies."
